Move Over, Primary Suite — Today’s Pets Want Luxury Too! ๐พ๐ก
Pools, gourmet kitchens and oversized primary suites have long been on the luxury homebuyer wish list. But apparently, there’s a new decision-maker in the house…

Pet-friendly real estate has gone to an entirely new level. Some homeowners are designing spaces around their four-legged family members with dedicated dog rooms, pet spas, washing stations, built-in feeding areas, indoor and outdoor play spaces, and even climate-controlled areas created specifically for their pets.
One recent example takes the idea of a “dog house” to a whole different level: homeowners reportedly spent around $2 million renovating a New York property with their 120-pound bearded Collie, Buster, in mind. His amenities include artificial turf with drainage, shaded outdoor areas, special pool access, toy stations and, yes… televisions for watching his favorite shows.
Now, I don't think we're going to see too many million-dollar dog houses popping up around Gold Canyon anytime soon. ๐ But the trend actually highlights something I see in everyday real estate:
Pets absolutely influence where people choose to live.
Here in Arizona, pet-loving buyers may pay special attention to features such as:
- A securely fenced backyard
- Shaded outdoor areas
- Easy-care tile or durable flooring
- A dog run or designated pet area
- A built-in pet door
- A laundry-room or garage dog-washing station
- Nearby walking trails and pet-friendly parks
For many buyers, those aren't simply “extras.” When your pet is part of the family, finding a home that works for them can be part of finding the right home for you.
And sellers, take note: if your home already has a great pet-friendly feature, don't overlook it when it's time to market your property. Sometimes it's the unexpected little details that make a buyer remember a home.
So, here's the fun question:
If money were no object, what ridiculous luxury would you add to your home for your pet?
A doggie swimming pool? A private pet spa? A catio? A climate-controlled dog room?
Apparently, in today's real estate market, “going to the doghouse” might actually be an upgrade. ๐พ๐ก
